Cancelled postal card mailed from Sacaton, Ariz., Pinal Co. November 8, 1883. The post office was established in January 1871. The origin of the name "Sacaton" is in doubt. The Pima Indian village may have been named for the meeting of the new and old branches of the Gila River at this point. In 1857, the Sacaton Butterfield Station ended at this village. Postmaster Cook, a German-born missionary and teacher, served the Pima Indians here. He also established a Presbyterian mission.
