Tonto, Gila County

Cancelled postal stationery entire mailed from Tonto, Gila Co, Arizona, December 4, 1885. The post office at Tonto was established on the Howell Ranch at the foot of a trail called Jump-off. It served the Cross-7 Cattle Company. The post office opened February 20, 1884 and closed June 6, 1902, with James B. Watkins as its postmaster. The Mormons abandoned the area on August 14, 1890. This picture of the Tonto National Monument, an outstanding 25 room cliff dwelling built in the 1300’s by the Salado Indians is today an interesting tourist attraction.
