Apache, Cochise County

Cancelled envelope mailed from Apache, Ariz., September 12, 1910. The return address is Chiricahua, Ariz. Little remains of the community called "Apache", which was named in remembrance of the days of the Apache raids led by Geronimo. Forty miles east of Douglas, it was a lonely outpost in the cattle country. The San Bernardino Valley, on the south side of the Chiricahua Mountains, was sparsely settled. Near this small community there was a monument erected in 1934 commemorating the surrender of Geronimo's band in 1886.
