Cancelled envelope mailed from Strawberry, AT (Arizona Territory). February 2, 1889. The stamps are pen cancelled, and the post office name and date are handwritten. In 1886, the first settlers in the community of Strawberry learned that the area had been named for a Tonto Chief as early as 1864 by Henry Clifton, a member of King S. Woolsey’s second expedition. It was later noted that Strawberry got its name from the many strawberries that used to grow there. Strawberry is the site of the oldest school house still standing in Arizona constructed of hand-hewed logs by early Pine Valley settlers.
