Cancelled postal card mailed from Thatcher, Ariz., December 31, 1909. In 1881, John Moody bought the Conley Ranch and the following year was joined by four Mormon families. Christopher Layton decided on a town site on higher land and bought it on October 9, 1885. The name Thatcher was selected as a result of a visit at Christmas by Mormon Apostle, Moses Thatcher. The post office was established on March 10, 1888 with Mrs. Elizabeth Layton, postmaster.
