Cancelled stamp on an envelope dated in Benson, Ariz., April 22, 1895, addressed in Chinese and English to Los Angeles, Cal. Benson was a stagecoach station in the early days. In March 1871 a detachment of the 19th U.S. Cavalrymen had a fight here with Cochise and one hundred fifty Indians. The cavalry would have been wiped out if reinforcements had not arrived. In the picture below several families posed before departing Benson. The Wells Fargo Express Office was in a separate building.
